Yes, we're being left behind again. I took the plunge and installed the newest firmware on my iPod Touch today. While there are a number of improvements over the previous versions (which I'm not going to go into here), I'm not too impressed.
It's all down to how us South Africans are being short-changed once again. Sure, we have access to the App Store, and we can buy applications without a hitch, we're not allowed to have any games. Now what the hell is that all about, huh? Although, having a partly-working iTunes store may be a step in the right direction, I'm sorry Apple...it's not enough yet. If we had a fully-functional iTunes store with Apps, Games, Music and Movies, I for one would actually buy my music.
SA being SOL once again is not my only gripe. Why won't Apple allow us to customize our own hardware (or at least the software running on that hardware)? The default style is ugly. Extremely so. There is hope yet, though. Even if the App Store kills off most of the "unauthorized" development out there, things like being able to customize your device will, in my humble opinion, keep the JailBreak scene alive and well. 2.0 has already been hacked. The finishing touches ('scuse the pun) are being worked on for the release of the new Pwnage tool. Then it'll only be a matter of time until apps like SMBPrefs get with the game.
Oh well. It's such a schlep to downgrade to 1.1.4 that I'll probably just leave 2.0 on until the Pwnage tool is released. In the meantime, here are some screenshots...
Edit, 20 July 2008: PwnageTool 2.0 is out, and winPwn should be out soon. However, it will be a while before most applications are ported to 2.0. My advice? Stay on 1.1.4 for now. I've downgraded, just to get back all the perks a pre-2.0 device offers.
